Best Time to Visit Kashmir: A Season-by-Season Guide

4 July 2026

Kashmir changes character completely with the seasons, so the 'best' time really depends on what kind of trip you're after. Here's how each season actually feels on the ground, based on the itineraries we run most often.

March to May — Spring in the Valley

Almond and apple blossoms cover Srinagar, temperatures sit in a comfortable 15-22°C range, and the Mughal Gardens are at their most photogenic. This is our top recommendation for first-time visitors and honeymooners who want pleasant weather without peak-season crowds.

June to August — Summer Escape from the Heat

This is peak season, and for good reason — it's the best window for families escaping the mainland heat, with cool evenings, clear skies for the Gulmarg gondola, and every route (including Sonmarg) fully accessible. Book hotels and houseboats at least a month ahead during these months.

September to November — Golden Autumn

Chinar trees turn deep red and gold, the crowds thin out, and photographers consistently rate this as their favourite season. Days are crisp rather than cold, making it ideal for longer walks around Dal Lake and day trips to Pahalgam.

December to February — Snow Season in Gulmarg

If snowfall, skiing, and the Gulmarg gondola in full winter mode are the point of your trip, this is your window — but expect sub-zero nights, some road closures toward Sonmarg, and the need for genuinely warm gear rather than a regular jacket.

Getting to Kashmir

Srinagar's airport is well connected to major Indian cities, with more frequent flights during peak summer and the winter snow season, and fewer in the shoulder months — book at least 4-6 weeks ahead if you're travelling in June-August or December-February, since both fares and hotel availability tighten considerably. From Srinagar, most itineraries move on to Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonmarg by road, so factor in 2-3 hours of driving between each base.

What to Pack, Season by Season

Spring and autumn call for layered clothing — a light jacket, a sweater, and something warmer for evenings, since daytime and night temperatures can differ by 10 degrees or more. Summer needs light woollens for the evenings even though days are pleasant, plus comfortable walking shoes for Gulmarg's meadows. Winter is genuinely cold — thermal layers, a proper down jacket, waterproof snow boots, and gloves aren't optional if you're visiting Gulmarg between December and February.

How Many Days Do You Need

A first-time visit works well over 5-6 nights: 2 nights in Srinagar, 2 in Gulmarg, and 1-2 in Pahalgam, with Sonmarg added as a day trip if road conditions allow. Honeymooners often prefer a slightly slower pace with an extra night on the houseboat instead of rushing between all three hill towns.

Where to Stay — Houseboats vs Hotels

A night or two on a Dal Lake houseboat is one of the most memorable parts of any Kashmir trip, and we recommend it for at least part of your stay regardless of season — just note that houseboats can feel cold in winter without good heating, so ask about this when booking. For the rest of your itinerary, Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam all have comfortable hotel options across budgets, and we match these to your season and preferences when we plan your trip.

Experiences Not to Miss, Whatever the Season

A shikara ride at sunrise on Dal Lake, breakfast at a floating vegetable market, and a walk through the Mughal Gardens are worth building into any itinerary regardless of when you visit. If you have an extra day, a side trip to Doodhpathri or Yusmarg gives you quieter alternatives to the more crowded Gulmarg and Pahalgam circuits, with much of the same scenery.

Food to Try in Kashmir

Don't leave without trying Rogan Josh, Yakhni, and Kashmiri Kahwa (a spiced saffron tea), and if your trip spans a Wazwan feast — a traditional multi-course banquet — treat it as an experience in itself rather than just a meal. Most of our itineraries include at least one such meal, arranged with local hosts rather than a standard restaurant.

Our Quick Season Picker

In short: choose spring for blossoms and mild weather, summer for family holidays and full accessibility, autumn for photography and quieter crowds, and winter for snow and skiing. Whichever season you land on, tell us your priorities and travel dates, and we'll build the itinerary, houseboat nights, and hotel picks around exactly what you're looking for.
